Blokur
Blokur is a London-based music rights and data platform that helps with global music reporting and licensing for digital services. It is an official partner of the Mechanical Licensing Collective (MLC) and serves clients worldwide.
The company was founded in 2017 by Phil Barry, a former recording artist who wanted to fix problems where artists aren’t paid properly. Blokur uses data engineering and sub-graph matching to link song recordings with their underlying compositions, addressing mislabelled data, reporting difficulties, and licensing gaps.
Blokur has released the Songwriters’ Review, which analyzes the top-songwriters based on their share of the most-streamed songs. In 2020, Tones and I topped the chart as the sole writer of Dance Monkey. The 2021 Songwriters’ Review, sponsored by The Ivors Academy, named Olivia Rodrigo as the top songwriter following the success of Sour.
The company works with partners such as 7digital and Tuned Global, and its funding comes from Innovate UK and Ascension. In 2022, Blokur began building a copyright hub for IMPEL Collective Management Limited. On December 6, 2023, the MLC announced its Supplemental Matching Network, which includes Blokur as one of five companies providing data matching to support the MLC’s processes.
