New Tales of the Flying Fox
New Tales of the Flying Fox (新飛狐外傳) is a 1984 Hong Kong wuxia film based on Jin Yong’s The Young Flying Fox. Produced by Shaw Brothers Studio and directed by Lau Sze-yuk, with a screenplay by Wong Jing, the movie stars Felix Wong, Alex Man, Bryan Leung, Tai Liang-chun, Kara Hui, Ku Kuan-chung, and Tong Chun-chung. The 89-minute Mandarin-language film was released on April 7, 1984, and earned about HK$1.74 million at the box office.
Plot:
Two swordsmen, Hu Yidao and Miao Renfeng, work together to start a rebellion, but tensions between them grow. They decide to settle who is the better swordsman with a duel. Hu Yidao dies from a seemingly minor cut, but the blade was poisoned by Tian Guinong, who wants to drive a wedge between the two masters. When Tian Guinong tries to kill Hu Yidao’s orphaned son, Hu Fei, their servant Ping Asi saves the boy and escapes. Hu Fei grows up under Ping Asi’s care and, as an adult, seeks to avenge his parents.
