Sten Heckscher
Sten Heckscher, born 29 July 1942 in Stockholm, is a Swedish lawyer and Social Democratic politician. He studied law at Uppsala University, earning his degree in 1968. He then built a long public career in Sweden’s legal system, holding various roles in the Ministry of Justice, the National Council for Crime Prevention, the Patent and Registration Office, and other institutions.
From 1987 to 1991 he was State Secretary in the Ministry of Justice, and from 1991 to 1994 he led the Swedish Patent and Registration Office. In 1994 Prime Minister Ingvar Carlsson named him Minister of Industry and Employment. He left in 1996 to become National Police Commissioner, a job he held until 2005. That year he became chief judge of the Administrative Court of Appeal in Stockholm, and in 2007 he was appointed President of the Supreme Administrative Court of Sweden.
Heckscher comes from a notable family: his father, Gunnar Heckscher, led the Right Wing Party, which later became the Moderate Party, and his grandfather was economist Eli Heckscher. He married Louise Nermark in 1990.
