1924–25 New Hampshire Bulls men's ice hockey season
The 1924–25 season was the University of New Hampshire’s first varsity men's ice hockey team. The Bulls were coached by Hank Swasey, in his first year. Swasey was a physical education professor who also led the school’s baseball and soccer programs, and he started UNH’s first ice hockey program. A temporary rink on a campus pond was used for practice and games. About 25 men showed up for the initial practice, giving the team a solid start. Because the rink was small and ice was natural, most games were played away from campus, and weather often interrupted practices. The first game wasn’t until late January.
UNH’s first road trip was a three-game swing to Maine on consecutive days.
- vs Bates: In the program’s debut, the game used 10-minute periods due to snowfall. Bates scored first, UNH defended well and Proudman tied the game for UNH’s first goal in history. Morton then scored the overtime winner to give UNH the win.
- vs Colby: UNH looked confident and won, with Proudman scoring the lead and UNH tallying five goals.
- vs the Association of St. Dominique’s: in a night game before about 5,000 fans, Morton opened the scoring, and UNH pulled away to add five more, finishing with a strong 6–1 win, though this was UNH’s first loss on the trip.
A game with MIT was cancelled due to poor ice, and the team then traveled to Boston to face Boston University. Goalie Ed Blewett was injured in practice and needed stitches after taking a puck to the face, but he started the game. BU took the lead and UNH struggled to keep up; Red Bartlett came in for Blewett at the start of the second period. BU scored again in the second period, and UNH was handed another loss as the game went on.
A rematch with BU was planned for the winter carnival, but spring weather forced the event to be cancelled, and the temporary rink was dismantled before the rematch could be played.
Note: goals against average is based on a 45-minute regulation game.
Season results: Overall 2–2–0; road 2–2–0. The Bulls were an independent program. Captain: Bill Sayward. Head coach: Hank Swasey.
