Star St.Germain is an American game developer, artist, designer, illustrator, and musician based in San Francisco. She studied at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts and explored many art forms in the Studio for Interrelated Media.

She is best known for the mixed-reality game HoloVista, which won the Apple Design Award and the Webby People’s Choice Award. She has also worked on Comic Book Tattoo and, with her studio Aconite, created the Bureau of Multiversal Arbitration.

In comics, St.Germain has written and drawn for Marvel, Image, and IDW, contributing to titles like Strange Tales, Girl Comics, and Womanthology: Heroic. Comic Book Tattoo, an anthology based on Tori Amos songs, won an Eisner Award and a Harvey Award.

As a musician, she plays electric cello. She represented Boston at the National Poetry Slam in 2003, did acting and modeling in Los Angeles, and collaborated with photographer David LaChapelle in 2006–2007. She appeared in music videos for Maroon 5 and Beirut. In 2009 she formed the band This Can’t End Well, where she was lead songwriter, singer, guitarist, cellist, and electronic drummer. She contributed to the 2020 Negativland album The World Will Decide.

In 2016, St.Germain co-founded the mixed-reality game studio Aconite with Nadya Lev. Their first prototype, Limberlost, was a location-based augmented reality game for bookstores and libraries. In 2020, Aconite released HoloVista for iOS, noted for its innovative gameplay, visuals, and story. The game won the Apple Design Award, IndieCade Best Narrative Award, and Pocket Gamer’s Most Innovative Game of the Year, with art direction influenced by St.Germain’s background in theater set design and comics. She has cited inspirations from the memory palace concept in House of Leaves and the artwork of J. H. Williams III.

In 2022, Aconite released the Bureau of Multiversal Arbitration, a multiplayer Discord game that uses generative AI to help players tell stories together. It was recognized with the Breakthrough in Storytelling Award from Columbia University’s Digital Storytelling Lab and received a nomination at A Maze.
