Status: Near Threatened (IUCN 3.1)
Description: An evergreen tree up to about 10 meters tall in the laurel family (Lauraceae).
Habitat and range: Endemic to the Andes of Ecuador, found at 1,700–2,500 meters. It lives in subtropical or tropical moist montane forests and cloud forests, and it needs moisture and the protection of other trees to grow.
Threats: Fires, grazing, and conversion of forest to farmland.
Distribution: Known from about ten scattered populations in Ecuador, including Parque Nacional Llanganates, Chillanes-El Tambo, Pichincha volcano, Guajalito River, Pululahua, Antisana, and Cayambe-Coca reserves.
Flowers and fruit: Flowers are fragrant and whitish with a tan cup. The fruit is dark green and half covered by a dome, like an acorn.
