Sphaeropteris squamulata
Sphaeropteris squamulata is a species of tree fern native to the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Java, Borneo, and parts of the southern Philippines, including the Sulu Archipelago. It grows in forests from sea level up to about 1,500 meters.
The plant has an erect trunk up to about 2 meters tall. Its fronds are about 1.5 meters long and can be pinnate or bipinnate. The stipe (leaf stalk) is densely covered with firm, medium-brown scales.
The spores form in sori near the midvein of the fertile pinnules and lack a protective covering called an indusium.
Taxonomically, it is a tree fern in the family Cyatheaceae. In the past, it has been placed in other genera, such as Cyathea and Alsophila.
