Sonoma State Seawolves

The Sonoma State Seawolves were the athletic teams of Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park, California. They competed in NCAA Division II as part of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), and fielded 11 varsity teams (4 men’s and 7 women’s). The team colors were navy, Columbia blue, and white, and the mascot was Lobo the Seawolf.

Home venues included The Wolves’ Den for basketball, Seawolf Diamond for baseball, Seawolf Softball Field, and Seawolf Soccer Field.

The Seawolves won three NCAA team championships: women’s soccer in 1990, men’s soccer in 2002, and men’s golf in 2009. In 2008, the department started the Seawolf Sports Network to stream home basketball games online and boost interest in the programs.

History and name change: from the university’s opening in 1962 until 2002, the teams were known as the Cossacks. The name was changed after a campus process to Seawolves, honoring local history and literature (Jack London’s The Sea-Wolf).

Current status: In January 2025, Sonoma State announced that its athletics department would be eliminated due to budget cuts, ending the Seawolves’ participation in NCAA competition.
