The Butterfly Lovers (2008) is a Hong Kong wuxia film directed by Jingle Ma, based on the Chinese legend of the Butterfly Lovers. It stars Wu Chun, Charlene Choi, and Hu Ge. The story follows Zhu Yanzhi, who disguises herself as a man to join the Carefree Clan and learn martial arts to protect her family. She falls in love with Liang Zhongshan, a senior clan member. When Zhu’s family arranges for her to marry Ma Cheng’en, Zhu refuses, and Ma threatens Liang and Zhu’s parents. Zhu agrees to marry Ma but lies to Liang that she no longer loves him. On Zhu’s wedding day, she secretly takes a herb to fake her death. Liang attends her funeral, intending to take her body to Butterfly Valley. Ma refuses to let him leave with Zhu’s body, and the two men duel. Liang defeats Ma but is mortally wounded. He digs a grave in Butterfly Valley for Zhu and dies beside her. Zhu awakens, finds Liang dead, and also dies. The lovers are buried together, and a pair of butterflies on Liang’s sword flutter away as they are laid to rest. Runtime: 102 minutes.
