John Lloyd Young
John Lloyd Young is an American actor and singer born on July 4, 1975, in Sacramento, California. He became famous for playing Frankie Valli in Jersey Boys on Broadway, a performance that won him the 2006 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical. He also sang lead on the Jersey Boys cast album, which went Platinum, and he later played Frankie Valli again in Clint Eastwood’s 2014 Jersey Boys film.
Young’s early life included the death of his mother when he was two and a father who served in the military. He grew up partly in Plattsburgh, New York, and he's a Brown University graduate. He built his career in New York theater before moving to Los Angeles, where he performed in Les Misérables at the Hollywood Bowl and became the first guest star on the TV show Glee.
In addition to acting, Young pursues visual art and music. He debuted as an artist in 2010 and has shown work with Hamilton-Selway Fine Art; his first art commission was for the Spago restaurant. His debut album, My Turn..., came out in 2012, with a re-release in 2014 adding eight new tracks. He has performed at venues such as Cafe Carlyle in New York and returned to Jersey Boys on Broadway in 2012, with a London West End debut in 2014.
Young has done extensive charity work and served on the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities, appointed by President Obama in 2013 and resigning in 2017 in protest of President Trump. He is a longtime member of the ACLU and practices Chinese Chan Buddhism.
