Sixaola
Sixaola is a district in the Limón province of Costa Rica, in the Talamanca canton. It sits on the border with Panama, across the Sixaola River from Guabito. The district was created on February 19, 1970.
Sixaola covers 169.32 square kilometers and lies about 10 meters above sea level. In 2011, 8,861 people lived there. The area is home to the Bribri Indigenous people.
The main road is Route 36, which continues into Panama as Route 1001. The road follows an old elevated railroad grade and a former railroad bridge crosses the Sixaola River at the border. Crossing requires both Costa Rican and Panamanian customs and visas.
Border towns have no accommodations or services. The nearest options are Puerto Viejo in Costa Rica and Changuinola in Panama, about 10 kilometers away. Buses and taxis operate on both sides of the border.
