1995–96 AS Bari season
AS Bari's 1995-96 season saw them compete in Serie A and Coppa Italia. The club was chaired by Vincenzo Matarrese. Giuseppe Materazzi started the season as manager, but on 4 December 1995 he was replaced by Eugenio Fascetti. Home games were played at Stadio San Nicola.
In Serie A, Bari finished 15th and were relegated to Serie B for the following season. In Coppa Italia, they were knocked out in the second round by Reggiana, coached by Carlo Ancelotti.
Off the field, Bari sold Emiliano Bigica and Lorenzo Amoruso to Fiorentina for about 8 million dollars to balance the books and also sent Sandro Tovalieri to Atalanta. They brought in Swedish forward Kennet Andersson and Portuguese right-back Abel Xavier (from Benfica).
The season began with eight points from the first seven rounds, including a 1-0 win over Milan. After a five-match losing streak, Materazzi was fired and Fascetti took over. Fascetti’s first game was a 7-1 defeat at Cremona, with Xavier used as sweeper. The team then endured a month of irregular results, though they beat Inter 4-1 and drew 1-1 with Juventus around Round 17, leaving them 16th at the halfway point, one point behind Torino.
In January Bari added Swedish midfielder Klas Ingesson and defender Roberto Ripa from Udinese. In the next eight matches they drew four and lost the others. In rounds 26-27 Bari won at Atalanta and beat Padova at home, but then lost 1-2 to Roma at home amid refereeing controversy. The season ended with a 3-0 defeat to Inter, sealing relegation, though the last game finished in a 2-2 draw with Juventus.
Top scorer Igor Protti netted 24 goals, sharing the Serie A top-scorer award with Giuseppe Signori of Lazio (Signori had more penalties). Protti formed a powerful partnership with Andersson, who scored 12 goals and provided many assists. Bari’s defense conceded 71 goals in 34 games, the second-worst total in Serie A that season. The club’s average home attendance was 26,322.
