Sir Sunderlal Hospital (SSH-BHU) is a teaching hospital of the Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University (IMS-BHU) in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. It sits on the BHU campus and is the largest tertiary referral hospital in Eastern Uttar Pradesh. The hospital is part of IMS-BHU, which is ranked 7th among India’s medical colleges in the NIRF 2024 rankings. In 2018, the Government of India upgraded SSH-BHU to AIIMS status. Established in 1926 and named after Sir Sunder Lal, the first Vice-Chancellor of BHU, it started with 96 beds and has grown to over 1,500 beds by 2017. SSH-BHU offers emergency services, a trauma center, and super‑specialty care, with the Vice-Chancellor of BHU as its patron.
