Josh Buchbinder, better known as Sir Dystic, has been a member of the hacker group Cult of the Dead Cow since May 1997. He created Back Orifice (BO), a remote-control tool for Windows, released to show security flaws in Windows 98 at DEF CON 6 in 1998. The name BO is a pun on Microsoft’s BackOffice Server. Dystic has said BO was meant to expose security holes, though its successor BO2K carried a different message. He has also written other tools, including SMBRelay, SMBRelay2, NetE, and NBName. SMBRelay tools enable man-in-the-middle attacks on Windows, while NBName can disrupt NetBIOS services and was released at DEF CON 8 in 2000. Dystic has spoken at hacker conventions, appeared on TV and radio, and is featured in an award-winning short film about hacker culture. His pseudonym comes from a 1930s bondage comic character, Sir Dystic D’Arcy, who, according to the character, tries to do evil but ends up doing good. Dystic says he reported NBName’s issues to Microsoft, and the company acknowledged them in a security bulletin.
