The Shizutani School, also called Shizutani Gakkō, was a school for common people opened in the early Edo period by the Okayama Domain. It is in Bizen, Okayama Prefecture, Japan. The Auditorium is recognized by Japan’s government as a National Treasure in the building/structure category.

The school began in 1666 when Ikeda Mitsumasa, the feudal lord of Bizen, visited Kidani Village in Wake and saw that it was a good place for education. In 1670, after two years of trial, his chief vassal Tsuda Nagatada was charged with completing the school. The place came to be called “Shizu-tani,” meaning a quiet and peaceful valley. Ikeda also placed his Kidani fief under the school’s direct rule so the school could support itself with local offerings and focus on culture, even if political power shifted.

The Lecture Hall was finished in 1701 by Ikeda Tsunamasa, Mitsumasa’s son. It is notable that a regional lord built a public school for ordinary people at that time. Ikeda believed that better public morality comes from educating the common people.

Two distinctive features set Shizutani School apart. First, the roof is made with Bizen Ware tiles. Second, a long, top-rounded stone wall surrounds the school, with Chinese-style stonework that harmonizes with the buildings. The main structures used wood from camphor, zelkova, and Japanese cypress, and were finished with black or clear varnish. After three centuries, the lecture hall floor still shines from use, showing careful construction.

The roof tiles are arranged in three layers to prevent leaks if an upper tile breaks. Each roof bears a unique symbol: the lecture hall tiles show a six-leaf crest; the tiles of Shizutani Shrine display a swallowtail, once a symbol of the Ikeda clan; and the tiles of the Confucian mausoleum symbolize “Academic Freedom.” Beside the lecture hall is a special room where Lord Ikeda would rest when visiting, built in a tearoom style to reflect the simple, sturdy spirit of Bushido.
