WASR (AM)
WASR (1420 AM) and WCGY-FM (97.3 FM) are a pair of country music radio stations in New Hampshire, owned by Dirk Nadon’s Lakes Media, LLC. WASR is licensed to Wolfeboro and serves the Lakes Region, while WCGY-FM is licensed to Jefferson and serves the North Country and White Mountains Region. The stations are branded together as Mountain Country NH.
WASR also broadcasts on two FM translators: 97.1 W246DI in Wolfeboro and 96.1 W241AJ in Laconia. WASR first went on the air in 1970; WCGY-FM began broadcasting in 2022 and started simulcasting on WASR in 2024.
Historically, WASR has run several formats including adult standards, talk, variety hits, and classic hits. In 2020, a new manager shifted the station to variety hits with local talk and live shows. After the manager retired in 2023, a consultant helped rebrand to Mountain Country 97, focusing on a classic rock/classic hits blend and local Lakes Region flavor.
In September 2024, Lakes Media purchased WASR for $75,000 and began simulcasting WCGY-FM as Mountain Country 97 on WASR. The stations now air country music under the Mountain Country NH branding. Website: mountaincountrynh.com
