Stay More: The World of Donald Harington
Stay More: The World of Donald Harington is a 2013 American documentary about author Donald Harington. Directed by Brian Walter and produced by Brian Walter Productions, the 95-minute film is based on interviews Walter conducted with Harington and his wife in 2006–07.
The documentary explains Stay More, the fictional Ozark village at the heart of Harington’s novels, and it shares his memories of Drakes Creek, the real town that inspired Stay More. Harington talks about his childhood, his difficult relationship with his parents, and losing his hearing at age 12. He also reflects on the challenges of getting his first books published and how sales and reviews didn’t always match his hopes.
The film blends humor about the writing life—joking about liquor, religion, and sex—with a bittersweet portrait of a talented but haunted artist. It presents Harington as a writer rooted in American folk traditions, whose triumphs are matched by disappointments, weaving comic relief into his tragedies.
