Sami Hyypiä is a Finnish former footballer and manager who played as a centre-back. He was born on October 7, 1973, in Porvoo, Finland.

He started his career with local clubs Kumu and MyPa, where he won the Finnish Cup in 1992 and 1995. He then moved to Willem II in the Netherlands, where he became captain and helped the team reach the UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds.

Hyypiä joined Liverpool in 1999 for £2.6 million. He quickly formed a strong partnership in central defense and became a fan favourite. In the 2000-01 season, he helped Liverpool win a cup treble: the League Cup, FA Cup, and UEFA Cup. He later contributed to Liverpool’s 2004-05 Champions League victory. Hyypiä was Liverpool’s captain for periods and made 464 appearances for the club, scoring 35 goals, before leaving in 2009.

In 2009, he moved to Bayer Leverkusen in Germany, where he played until retiring in 2011. He scored goals and was highly regarded as a solid defender.

On the international stage, Hyypiä played for Finland from 1992 to 2010, earning 105 caps and captaining the national team from 2008. He is one of Finland’s most capped players.

After retiring, Hyypiä pursued coaching. He worked with Bayer Leverkusen, then managed Brighton & Hove Albion in England in 2014, and later coached Zürich in Switzerland. He also served as an assistant for Finland’s national team. In 2020 he was an assistant at Haka in Finland.

Off the field, Hyypiä has been involved in charity work to help young Finnish athletes and completed the Helsinki City Marathon in 2011. He has received recognition in Finland, including induction into the Finnish Football Hall of Fame (2015) and the Finnish Sports Hall of Fame (2024).

Hyypiä spent his childhood in Kuusankoski, Finland, into a footballing family. He briefly explored opportunities in England and the Netherlands before settling in Liverpool, where he realized his dream of playing for the club he supported as a boy. He has two sons and, as of 2021, has been dating Finnish racing driver Emma Kimiläinen.
