Sam Johnson (footballer, born 1992)
Sam Johnson is an English goalkeeper who plays for FC Halifax Town and serves as the club’s captain and record appearance maker. Born on 1 December 1992 in Newcastle-under-Lyme, he is tall and known for his calm, confident style.
He began in the Stoke City youth system before joining Port Vale, turning professional in 2011. He made his competitive Vale debut in 2012 in a Football League Trophy match against Walsall, where he saved three penalties and scored the winning kick in the shootout. He helped Vale win promotion to League One in 2012-13.
Johnson spent time on loan at Stafford Rangers, Alfreton Town, FC Halifax Town (twice) and Gateshead before moving to Halifax Town permanently in 2017. He played a key role as Halifax won promotion from the National League North via the play-offs that year and later won the FA Trophy with Halifax in 2016. He also helped Halifax reach another FA Trophy final in 2023, keeping a clean sheet as they won the trophy again.
Off the pitch, he was Halifax’s Player of the Year for 2018-19 and was named to the National League Team of the Season in 2021-22. He was appointed club captain in August 2023. In recent seasons he has been a mainstay in goal and a leader for the team, signing a new two-year contract in 2025.
