Sack of Athenry
The Sack of Athenry was a battle in 1572 in Ireland. Athenry had strong walls built in 1316 to protect the town during the Bruce Wars. In 1572, during the Mac an Iarla Wars, Athenry was attacked. The Annals of the Four Masters say this was the first in a series of attacks by the Mac an Iarlas and later by Red Hugh O'Donnell. By the end of the 16th century, Athenry, once the leading town in Connacht, was reduced to a shell and did not recover until the late 1990s.
