SModcast is a comedy podcast hosted by filmmaker Kevin Smith. It started with his longtime partner Scott Mosier, though Mosier has appeared less over time and guest hosts have filled in. New episodes used to come out on Sundays or Mondays and were then released on iTunes the following Friday to ease bandwidth; the schedule later became irregular. Each hour-long episode features Smith and Mosier or a guest discussing current events and offbeat topics.

The name SModcast comes from combining Smith and Mosier’s initials and replacing the P in “podcast.” It began on Quick Stop Entertainment, with new episodes available on Sundays or Mondays and added to the RSS feed the following Friday. On January 1, 2010, the host site was sold, SModcasts moved to a dedicated site, and the iTunes delay was dropped starting with episode 101.

Spinoffs and merchandise followed: a 2009 book of Smith’s favorite SModcasts, Shootin’ the Sh*t with Kevin Smith; a coffee called SMoffee with proceeds going to The Wayne Foundation; and a sneaker line called SMeaker with Etnies debuted at San Diego Comic-Con in 2011.

A fun tie-in: the film Yoga Hosers got its title from a remark about a “yoga hoser” heard on SModcast, and the character Yogi Bayer is based on a real person described in the media.

SModcast earned early recognition, being named one of the best new podcasts by iTunes in 2007, and in 2010 several episodes were listed among iTunes’ Best Podcasts of 2010, alongside shows like Jay & Silent Bob Get Old and Hollywood Babble-On.
