S. Shankar
S. Shankar, born Shankar Shanmugam on 17 August 1963 in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, is a prominent Indian film director, producer, and screenwriter who works mainly in Tamil cinema. He is one of the industry’s best-known and highest-paid directors and has also worked in Hindi and Telugu films. His movies often address social issues, feature action and vigilante themes, and use advanced technology and visual effects.
Shankar made his directing debut with Gentleman (1993), which became a blockbuster and earned him major directing awards. He frequently teams up with composer A. R. Rahman. Notable films include Kaadhalan (1994), Indian (1996) which India submitted for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, Jeans (1998), and Anniyan (2005). He directed Sivaji (2007) with Rajinikanth and Enthiran (2010) with Rajinikanth and Aishwarya Rai; its sequel 2.0 (2018) was a record-breaking Tamil film at the time.
Shankar has also produced successful films like Mudhalvan (1999) and pursued ambitious projects such as Indian 2, the sequel to Indian, and Game Changer in Telugu. Indian 2 released in July 2024 but received a negative reaction and performed poorly at the box office. Game Changer, released in January 2025, also did not meet expectations.
Personal life: He is married to Easwari Shankar and has three children, including daughter Aditi Shankar, who acted in Viruman (2022). His elder daughter Aishwarya married Tarun Karthikeyan in April 2024 after divorcing cricketer Rohit; his son Arjith Shankar is pursuing acting.
