Rua Augusta (São Paulo)
Rua Augusta (São Paulo)
Rua Augusta is a street in São Paulo, Brazil, connecting the Jardins district to the city’s downtown. The upper part near Jardins is a stylish shopping area, while the section known as Baixo Augusta, between Paulista Avenue and Praça Roosevelt, is famous for nightlife with clubs, bars, and live music.
Length and location: about 3.02 kilometers long, located in São Paulo, Brazil. It runs from Rua Martinho Prado 212 near Praça Roosevelt to Rua Colômbia 26 at the crossing with Rua Estados Unidos in Jardins.
History: The street is first referenced in 1875 as Rua Maria Augusta and was later known as Rua Augusta by 1897. It lay on land once owned by Mariano António Vieira, who developed streets in Bela Sintra, including Avenida Paulista. In 1890 he opened a dirt trail to accommodate donkey-pulled trams; electric lighting arrived in 1891, enabling electric trams.
From 1910 to 1912 the street was extended to Rua Álvaro de Carvalho and was officially recognized in 1927. Until 1942, Rua Martins Fontes was part of Rua Augusta. The street gradually became associated with prostitution and was partly dismembered. The portion from Paulista Avenue toward Jardins, reaching Rua Estados Unidos, was made official in 1914.
