Rome (R&B singer)
Rome, born Jerome Woods on March 5, 1970, in Benton Harbor, Michigan, is an American R&B singer. He is best known for the 1997 hit "I Belong to You (Every Time I See Your Face)," which reached the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100 and helped his debut album, Rome (1997), sell over 500,000 copies in the U.S.
As a student, he sang in a high school cover band called Fire & Ice and toured regionally. He briefly attended Oakwood University but dropped out in 1989 and moved to California to pursue music. There, producers Gerald Baillergeau and Victor Merrit heard his demo and sent it to RCA Records, which signed him and released his self-titled debut in 1997.
RCA planned a second album, but the project was rejected. He released Rome2000: Thank You independently. In 2001, he released two albums, To The Highest and To Infinity (Thank You); the latter is an alternate edition of the former. He followed with Do It in 2003. About three years later, Sony issued Rome’s Best Of, featuring tracks from his debut.
Since 2009, Rome has been with Suthun Music Entertainment. He has been associated with labels RCA (1996–1999), JTJ (2001–2003), and Suthun Music Entertainment (2009–present).
