Percina westfalli

Percina westfalli, commonly known as Westfall's darter or the sooty-banded darter, is a small freshwater fish in the perch family native to the Southeastern United States. It lives on the bottom of streams and small rivers, preferring sandy or gravelly bottoms and feeding mainly on insects. The species occurs in the Apalachicola Basin where it coexists with Percina crypta. It was once treated as the same species as Percina nigrofasciata but is now recognized as its own species; some sources have not yet updated to reflect the split. Its range extends from the Apalachicola River basin east along the Gulf Slope, and from the Savannah River basin south to the St. Johns River basin on the Atlantic Slope. Earlier accounts noted that Percina nigrofasciata did not occur in the Satilla and St. Marys river systems in Georgia and Florida. Westfall's darter is generally common across much of its range but is rare in the Altamaha River system.
