Richmond High School (Richmond, Indiana)
Richmond High School is a public high school in Richmond, Indiana. It is part of Richmond Community Schools and serves students in grades 9 through 12. The principal is Rae Woolpy. About 1,331 students attend RHS (2023–2024), with roughly 86 teaching staff, for a student–teacher ratio around 15 to 1.
Location and history
RHS sits at 380 Hub Etchison Parkway in Richmond, Wayne County. The current building was constructed between 1939 and 1941 in Colonial Revival style and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2015. Before 1939, the school was known as Morton High School, named after Indiana Civil War governor Oliver P. Morton.
Facilities and campus
The original campus included Morton Hall (academic building), Civic Hall (gym), and McGuire Hall (home to the Richmond Art Museum). As the school grew, the Tiernan Center was built for basketball, volleyball, and wrestling. Civic Hall was later converted into the Civic Hall Performing Arts Center, a 924-seat venue that hosts the Richmond Symphony Orchestra and other arts events. The school today provides about 500,000 square feet of space for instruction and student support.
Academics
Richmond High School offers Advanced Placement courses in biology, calculus, chemistry, English (composition and literature), environmental science, government, U.S. history, physics, and statistics. Students can also earn college credits through dual‑credit programs with Earlham College, Indiana University East, Indiana University, and Ivy Tech Community College.
Athletics
The Red Devils compete in the North Central Conference of Indiana (IHSAA). Sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, gymnastics (girls), soccer, softball, tennis, volleyball (girls), and wrestling. A bowling team for boys and girls participates at the club level.
State championships have been won in Boys Basketball (1992), Boys Cross Country (1994), Boys Golf (1941, 1993, 1996, 1997, 2003), and Wrestling (1958).
Notable alumni
Richmond High School counts several well-known graduates, including Weeb Ewbank, famous NFL coach; Wendell Stanley, Nobel Prize winner; George Duning, Oscar-nominated composer; Wilbur Wright, aviation pioneer; and other notable figures in sports, the arts, and science.
