Rhyssa is a genus of parasitic wasps in the family Ichneumonidae, subfamily Rhyssinae. The name comes from Greek and means "wrinkled." Female wasps have a very long, hair-thin ovipositor they use to drill into wood and lay eggs on larvae living there. The larvae then feed on and develop inside the wood until they are ready to emerge. Rhyssa species are found across much of Europe, Australia, the Near East, North America (Nearctic), the Indomalayan region, and North Africa.
