Rein Jan Hoekstra (25 November 1941 – 11 January 2025) was a Dutch jurist. He was born in Dokkum and studied law at the University of Groningen, finishing in 1965. He worked as a lawyer from 1965 to 1970. In 1983 he was Chief of Staff to Prime Minister Ruud Lubbers. From 1986 to 1994 he was Secretary General at the Ministry of General Affairs. In 1994 he joined the Raad van State, the Netherlands’ top administrative court. In 2003 he was an informateur (a person who helps form a government) for the Crown, together with Frits Korthals Altes of the VVD, helping to form the second Balkenende cabinet. On 25 November 2006 he was again named informateur during the 2006–2007 cabinet formation after the 2006 elections, helping to form the fourth Balkenende cabinet. He was a member of the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA). He was married and had one daughter. Hoekstra died on 11 January 2025 at the age of 83.
