From 1867 until the Kingdom of Saxony was abolished in 1918, men aged 25 and over in Saxony elected Reichstag deputies. After the North German Confederation Treaty, Saxony joined the North German Confederation in 1866, so its deputies sat in the Reichstag there. When the German Empire was founded on January 18, 1871, Saxony’s deputies moved to the Reichstag of the German Empire. Elections in Saxony began with February 1867 elections. Zittau kept electing Reichstag deputies until 1919, when the constituencies were scrapped. The March 3, 1871 election was for the first Reichstag of the German Empire.
