Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology
Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology
Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology is a monthly, peer‑reviewed scientific journal that covers the legal and regulatory aspects of toxicology and pharmacology. It is published by Elsevier for the International Society of Regulatory Toxicology & Pharmacology. The journal has been in publication since 1981.
Editors and scope:
The current co‑editors‑in‑chief are Lesa L. Aylward and Martin van den Berg. The journal addresses regulatory science, risk assessment, policy, and oversight related to toxicology and pharmacology.
Controversies and responses:
In 2002, a group of 45 academics accused the journal of pro‑industry bias and questioned its peer review process, citing a case where editor Gio Batta Gori was paid by the Tobacco Institute to publish an article downplaying secondhand smoke risks. In response, the publisher introduced a conflict‑of‑interest disclosure policy in 2003. A 2013–2015 analysis found that many tobacco/nicotine papers had authors with tobacco industry ties, and most conclusions favored the industry; papers without ties did not. In December 2025, the journal retracted a 2000 article arguing that glyphosate is not a carcinogen, with the co‑editor noting that the retraction was necessary to maintain scientific integrity. The retraction cited reliance on internal unpublished Monsanto studies and suggested possible undisclosed industry involvement.
Indexing and impact:
The journal is indexed in major databases such as EMBASE and Scopus. It has reported an impact factor of 3.271 for 2021. Earlier, in 2014, it had an impact factor of 2.031, ranking within the Toxicology and Pharmacology categories.
