Manushi
Manushi is an Indian magazine and publishing house that focuses on feminism, gender studies, and social change. It started in 1978 in New Delhi, founded by Madhu Kishwar and Ruth Vanita, who edited it together until 1991. Today it is published every two months and had 157 issues by 2006.
The publishing house also releases books and short stories, including works not directly about gender issues. Manushi aims to share writing about the full range of South Asian communities, regularly covering women’s issues in Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, and occasionally pieces from other parts of the world. Editors seek to highlight voices often ignored in English-language media in South Asia. They invite activists to contribute articles about peasants, workers, and minority groups, whether religious or ethnic. Manushi also runs lecture series and training programs and provides information to women who have been victimized.
