Raymonde Vital

Raymonde Vital lived in Montaillou, in the county of Foix, in the early 14th century. She became notable when Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie wrote about her in his 1975 book Montaillou. She worked as a servant for the Belot family in Montaillou, where she met Arnaud Vital, a cobbler who boarded there. They married and lived together, but the marriage was unhappy because Arnaud ignored her and had several mistresses. After Arnaud’s death, Raymonde married Bernard Guilhou. For a time she was also the mistress of priest Pierre Clergue.
