Foxtails (band)
Foxtails is an American screamo band from Monroe, Connecticut. They blend screamo, post-hardcore, and math rock. The band formed in 2015 and features four nonbinary members who use they/them pronouns: Blue Luno Solaz (vocals and bass), June Benham (guitar), Michael Larocca (drums), and Jared Schmidt (violin). Former member Josh Garcia played bass and briefly guitar.
The members met at the Regional Center for the Arts, a performing arts high school in Trumbull, Connecticut. Benham recruited Larocca during high school; he joined after initially declining. Garcia joined on bass, briefly switched to guitar, then left. After Garcia’s departure, Solaz played bass, and Foxtails continued as a trio.
Their debut album, This Is Not for You, was released in 2015 (stylized in lowercase). In 2017 they released Ill, recorded at Dead Air Studios in Amherst, Massachusetts, and produced by Will Killingsworth; Solaz played bass on this record. The band’s third album, Querida Hija (2019), was their first with a song entirely in Spanish, inspired by Latinx voices.
In 2022 Foxtails released Fawn, their fourth album and the first to feature violinist Jared Schmidt. It was mixed and produced by Steve Roche and recorded at Permanent Hearing Damage in Philadelphia; it received positive reviews from Sputnikmusic, Stereogum, Paste, and BrooklynVegan.
Their 2024 release, an EP titled Home (lowercase), was the first Foxtails release mixed by Solaz. Proceeds from the first-week sales were donated to the Sylvia Rivera Law Project, which helps transgender, intersex, and gender-nonconforming people who are low-income or people of color.
