Rath, Uttar Pradesh
Rath is a town with a municipal board in Hamirpur district, Uttar Pradesh. It is a tehsil headquarters about 506 km southeast of New Delhi, located at 25.58°N 79.57°E and at an elevation of 165 meters. The climate ranges from 10°C to 47°C. As of the 2011 census, Rath had a population of 65,056 (54% male, 46% female). The literacy rate is 61% (male 70%, female 50%), with 15% of residents under six years old.
Governance: Rath is governed by a Nagar Palika (municipality) with a 25-member council, chaired by an elected chairperson. It is the headquarters of its subdivision, with the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) also heading the City Magistrate court. The SDM is assisted by one Tehsil Magistrate and three Nayab Tehsil Magistrates. The Tehsildar handles revenue matters, aided by Nayabs for three divisions: Majgawan, Amgaon, and Rath city. The police administration is headed by a Deputy Superintendent of Police; Rath Kotwali is led by a Kotwal (Inspector cadre). The Rath police circle has two stations.
Transport: The nearest airports are Khajuraho (110 km), Kanpur (145 km), and Lucknow (225 km). Rath is connected by UPSH-21 and UPSH-42 roads, plus MDR-41B. UPSRTC and private buses operate to many cities. Rath has a bus terminal and several stands (Orai, Charkhari near Ramleela Maidan, Jalalpur). Regular buses connect Rath with Mahoba, Banda, Maudaha, Orai, Chitrakoot, and Hamirpur. Rail service is not direct; the nearest stations are Halparpur (45 km), Kulpahar (47 km), and Orai (55 km). Rath is also linked by road to Allahabad, Varanasi, Kanpur, Lucknow, Delhi, Agra, Jhansi, Noida, Jaipur, Mathura, and Ajmer.
