Meghna (মেঘনা) is one of Bangladesh’s major rivers and a key part of the Ganges Delta, the world’s largest delta, which flows into the Bay of Bengal. The Meghna is formed inside Bangladesh when the Surma and Kushiyara rivers join near Bhairab Bazar in Kishoreganj District. Along its journey, it receives water from other rivers such as Gumti, Feni, and Titas, growing as it travels southeast toward Chandpur. At Chandpur, the Padma and Jamuna rivers join the Meghna, and from there it is called the Lower Meghna. The river then heads toward the Bay of Bengal, finally emptying through four main mouths near Bhola: Tetulia (Ilsha), Shahbazpur, Hatia, and Bamni. The Meghna is one of the widest rivers in the country, and large bridges near Daudkandi connect it with the Gumti River. Downstream, the water braids into several channels before rejoining, forming part of the vast Ganges Delta as it reaches the sea.
