Radu Voina
Radu Voina, born on July 29, 1950 in Șaeș, Romania, is a former handball player and long-time coach. He played as a right back and spent his club years with Voinţa Sighişoara, Universitatea București, and Steaua Bucharest from 1969 to 1991, winning the European Champions League with Steaua in 1977.
Voina played for the Romanian national team 269 times and scored 495 goals. He competed in three Olympic Games (1972, 1976, 1980), winning bronze in 1972, silver in 1976, and bronze in 1980. He was part of the 1974 World Championship-winning team and won gold at the World University Games in 1973, 1975, and 1977.
As a coach, Voina began as a player-coach at Steaua (1980–1991), leading the team to nine national championships and one EHF Champions League final. He also coached the Romanian men’s national team, earning bronze at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. In France he coached Racing Strasbourg, Sélestat Alsace, and ASL Robertsau.
Voina later returned to coach the Romanian men’s team (2001–2004) and led the Romanian women’s national team from 2008 to 2012. At club level, he coached CS Oltchim Râmnicu Vâlcea (2009–2010 and 2011–2012). In the 2009–2010 season, he guided Oltchim to the Women's EHF Champions League Final for the first time in the club’s history, though they lost to Viborg HK. He also led Romania to a bronze medal at the 2010 European Women’s Handball Championship. Voina’s contracts expired in 2012, and he did not renew them.
