List of gothic rock artists
Notable artists described as gothic rock by reliable sources are listed here. Gothic rock is a subgenre of post-punk and alternative rock that began in the late 1970s. Pitchfork and NME identify several proto-gothic bands, including Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joy Division, Bauhaus, and The Cure. The term is said to have been first used by critic John Stickney in 1967 to describe The Doors and their music and performances. The Doors’ dark lyrics and dramatic shows are often seen as the beginnings of gothic rock.
