Queipa Revolution
Queipa Revolution
The Queipa Revolution was a Venezuelan military uprising from March 2 to June 12, 1898, part of the country’s civil wars. It began after Joaquín Crespo helped his ally Ignacio Andrade win the presidency through electoral fraud, defeating José Manuel Hernández (Mocho Hernández). Hernández then rose up against Crespo.
Fighting grew to about 2,000 government troops against roughly 1,600 rebels. The main clash happened at Mata Carmelera on April 16, where Crespo was killed in battle. Despite his death, the rebel forces continued to fight.
On June 5, the government, led by War Minister Antonio Fernández, defeated about 600 rebels. Andrade sent Ramón Guerra to command the campaign, and on June 12 Guerra defeated and captured Hernández at El Hacha in Yaracuy. The uprising ended with a Crespo faction victory, though Crespo himself had died.
