Markovščina is a small clustered village in the Municipality of Hrpelje-Kozina, in Slovenia’s Littoral region. It sits in the karst Materija Lowland, a dry valley stretching from Kozina to Starod, and covers about 3.83 square kilometers at an elevation of around 562 meters. The population was 115 in 2002.

The village is connected by road to Materija to the northwest and Podgrad to the southeast.

History and name: Markovščina was first recorded in 1295 and 1371 as sancti Marci. Other historical forms include S. Marco (1475), de Marcossa (1512), and Marcouschena (1694). The name comes from markovski, meaning “of Mark,” referring to Saint Mark; it therefore means “settlement near St. Mark’s Church.” An alternative name from 1295 was Novak(i).

Church: The local church is dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua and belongs to the Parish of Slivje. The Italian name for the village is Marcossina.
