Quality Street: A Seasonal Selection for All the Family
Quality Street: A Seasonal Selection for All the Family is a studio album by British singer-songwriter Nick Lowe. It was released on 29 October 2013 by Yep Roc Records. The music mixes Christmas songs with rock and Americana, and it was recorded at Gravity Shack Studios in London (the studio is now named Silver Shark Studios). Lowe produced the album with Robert Treherne and Neil Brockbank.
The album includes three Lowe originals: Christmas at the Airport, I Was Born in Bethlehem, and A Dollar Short of Happy. It also features covers of Roger Miller’s Old Toy Trains and Wizzard’s I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday. A track called Hooves on the Roof was written for the album by Ron Sexsmith.
As a promotion, the whole album was streamed on YouTube for 24 hours on 25 July 2013.
Critics noted the album’s warm, inventive take on Christmas music. AllMusic highlighted Lowe’s charming style. The Washington Post covered the release in November 2013. Lowe performed Christmas at the Airport on NPR in December 2013. Uncut gave the album 4 out of 5 stars, and The Independent named it Album of the Week in December 2013.
In 2019, Rolling Stone ranked Quality Street No. 17 on its list of 40 Essential Christmas Albums.
