Preservation and Long-term Access through Networked Services (PLANETS)

PLANETS was a European project aimed at solving big challenges in digital preservation. Its main goal was to create practical services and tools that help ensure long-term access to digital cultural and scientific assets.

After the project, the work continued under the Open Planets Foundation from 2010 onward.

One notable achievement was the 2010 Time Capsule PLANETS deposited in Swiss Fort Knox. The capsule contained digital data and explicit instructions on how to retrieve and decode it, designed to protect knowledge for future generations.

In 2012, PLANETS received the Digital Preservation Coalition’s award for Research and Innovation.
