Precipitation (horse)
Precipitation (1933–1957) was a British-bred Thoroughbred stallion who left a lasting mark on many races and sport horses today. He was by Hurry On out of Double Life, a foundation mare at Someries Stud, and helped preserve the Matchem sireline through his son Sheshoon.
He didn’t race until age three due to a heel problem but went on to win seven races, including the 1937 Ascot Gold Cup (20 furlongs) and the 1936 King Edward VII Stakes (12 furlongs), along with Gratwicke Stakes and the Queen’s Prize (16 furlongs), earning £18,419.
As a sire, Precipitation became one of England’s leading studs after starting in 1938. He produced over 50 stakes winners from 431 race winners (prize money about £269,675), and his daughters produced 810 winners worth about £541,370. His bloodlines spread to New Zealand through four sons—Admiral’s Luck, Count Rendered, Summertime and Agricola—and he also sired sport horses, including Furioso, the sire of Furioso II and Cor de la Bryere. Precipitation died on 6 March 1957.
