Praetoria Augusta (castra)
Praetoria Augusta was a Roman fort (castra) in the province of Dacia, in what is now Romania. It stood near Inlăceni in Harghita County, close to Sărățeni and Odorheiu Secuiesc. The fort covered about 2 hectares, measuring roughly 146 by 142 meters, and was built in stone, with later wood and earth structures. It housed garrisons from cohorts IV Hispanorum equitata and VIII Raetorum civium Romanorum equitata. The site is located at 46°25′56″N 25°07′16″E, and today the place is known as Cetate, in the village of Inlăceni. Praetoria Augusta is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Frontiers of the Roman Empire – Dacia, inscribed in 2024 during the 46th session, for cultural reasons (criteria II, III, IV). It is also listed as a National Historic Monument of Romania. The fort is currently ruined and was discovered in 1858.
