Armene was an ancient Greek city on the Black Sea coast of the region called Paphlagonia. In Xenophon’s Anabasis, the Ten Thousand anchored their ships there on the return journey and stayed five days. The town belonged to Sinope and was about 50 stadia west of Sinope, with a harbor. A small river flowed into the harbor and was known by several names in ancient sources, such as Ochosbanes, Ochthomanes, or Ocheraenus. Strabo records a proverb about Armene: “whoever has nothing to do would wall Armene.” The site is near Akliman in Asiatic Turkey.
