Ulmener Maar
Ulmener Maar is a volcanic crater lake (maar) in the Eifel mountains, near the town of Ulmen in Rhineland‑Palatinate, Germany. The lake is up to 37 meters deep and is surrounded by a 20‑meter‑high ring of tuff from the old volcano. On the southern edge are the ruins of Ulmen Castle, dating from the 11th century. The lake is about 0.5 kilometers long and 0.25 kilometers wide, at an elevation of 440 meters above sea level, and it has no natural outflow. Inflows include Römerstollen (from Jungferweiher); Ulmener Bach has been redirected since 1875. The Ulmener Maar is considered the youngest volcano in central Europe and is part of the Vulkaneifel region, where maars form through phreatomagmatic eruptions. In October 2022, the IUGS named the Holocene Ulmen Maar one of the world’s 100 Geological Heritage Sites.
