Porcupine Tree
Porcupine Tree is an English rock band formed in 1987 by Steven Wilson in Hemel Hempstead, England. It began as a solo project for Wilson, who later turned it into a full band. The early music mixed psychedelic, space, and experimental rock, and the group gradually moved toward a more song‑oriented, progressive sound.
Initial lineup and growth
In 1993 Wilson brought in regular collaborators to form the first permanent lineup: Richard Barbieri on keyboards, Colin Edwin on bass, and Chris Maitland on drums, with Wilson as lead singer and guitarist. Maitland left in 2002 and Gavin Harrison joined as the new drummer. The band spent years building a distinct, atmospheric style that drew comparisons to Pink Floyd but stayed its own, blending textures, electronics, and shifting textures.
From indie roots to major releases
Porcupine Tree started with underground and self‑released material, then gained attention with early albums on the Delerium label. Their 1995 album The Sky Moves Sideways and the 1996 Signify helped them become a recognized name in progressive and experimental rock. The late 1990s brought a shift toward more accessible songwriting on albums like Stupid Dream (1999) and Lightbulb Sun (2000), which brought wider attention and success.
A bigger sound and wider audience
In Absentia (2002) marked a move toward a heavier, more adventurous rock sound, followed by Deadwing (2005), which featured guest appearances from Alex Lifeson and other notable players. Fear of a Blank Planet (2007) continued their evolving mix of heavy and melodic elements, with themes exploring youth, media, and modern life. The Incident (2009) featured a long central piece and a broad tour, reflecting the band’s continued growth.
Hiatus and a rare reunion
After touring The Incident, Porcupine Tree became less active as Steven Wilson pursued solo projects. For many years there was little new material, though work continued privately. In 2021, Wilson, Barbieri, and Gavin Harrison revived the band’s activity and released Closure/Continuation in 2022, an album recorded largely in secret over many years. The lineup for live performances also included touring members Randy McStine (guitar) and Nathan Navarro (bass).
Style, influence, and image
Porcupine Tree is known for melancholic, richly textured music that blends psychedelic, space, electronic, and heavy rock influences. The band often crafts albums as cohesive “sound worlds,” with careful production and atmospheric arrangement. They are considered highly influential in modern progressive rock and have inspired many newer artists across various genres.
Legacy and current status
Porcupine Tree helped shape a generation of progressive and alternative rock listeners with a careful balance of experimentation and songcraft. As of now, they continue to perform and record in a limited, project‑like form, with Wilson focused on his solo work but leaving open the possibility of future collaborations. Closure/Continuation remains the latest widely released work, and the band has expressed interest in continuing to make music together in some form.
