Oscar Røine
Oscar Ragnvald Martinius Røine (7 September 1888 – 2 December 1966) was a Norwegian trade unionist and Labour Party politician. He started as a mail carrier for Norway Post and worked his way up to postal officer. From 1921 he served on the board of the Norwegian Union of Postmen and became its chairman in 1938.
During the Nazi occupation, he fought to keep the union from being taken over. On 15 May 1941, he was one of 43 signatories who protested Nazi attempts to nazify the unions in a letter to Reichskommissar Josef Terboven. The protest led to arrests: on 12 June 1941 and again on 18 June 1941, including Røine. He was imprisoned in Møllergata 19 from 12 June to 31 July 1941.
After the war, he returned as leader of the Norwegian Union of Postmen but stepped down in 1945 and became a stamp controller. He retired in 1954. He served on Drammen’s city council from 1927 to 1936. Although he never played sports himself, he was a football referee and official for Drammens BK and the Buskerud District Football Association. In July 1951 he received the King’s Medal of Merit in silver, and he also earned high honors from the Norwegian Union of Postmen, Drammens BK, and the International Order of Good Templars. He died in December 1966 at age 79.
