Samuel Perry (ironmaster)
Samuel Perry (c. 1864 – 19 March 1930) was an Australian ironmaster and industrialist in South Australia. Born in Shropshire, England, to John and Harriett Perry, he was the brother of Rev. Isaiah Perry. He trained as an engineer with the Coalbrookdale Company.
Around 1886, at about 22, he moved to Gawler, SA, where he worked at James Martin's Phoenix Foundry and lived with the Roediger family at Buchfelde (later Loos). He later worked in Port Adelaide and as a foreman for John Danks & Son in Melbourne. He returned to Adelaide and started his own business by buying Cornwall Foundry from James Wedlock, moving the factory to Perry Engineering at Mile End, and purchasing the James Martin & Co. workshops in Gawler.
He brought in his nephew Frank Perry, who became managing director and chairman after Samuel's death. Samuel Perry married Mary Jane Rofe of Port Adelaide on 7 March 1894; they had a daughter and lived at Brier Holme, Grove Street, Unley Park. He was a member of the Royal SA Yacht Squadron, and his motor yacht Isis was the largest in South Australia.
Samuel Perry died on 19 March 1930. His work helped establish Perry Engineering, a major South Australian engineering firm.
