Backeljaia gigaxii is a small land snail that lives on land and breathes air. It belongs to the family Geomitridae.

What it looks like
The shell is about 5.4–8.1 mm wide and 7.4–12.2 mm tall. It is light brown or sandy with pale bands. The whorls in the shell grow more quickly than in a similar species, Candidula intersecta. The opening around the shell’s axis (the umbilicus) is very narrow, but it gets wider on the last whorl. The shell is usually flatter and a bit larger than that of C. intersecta.

Where it lives
Backeljaia gigaxii is found in parts of Western Europe and nearby islands.

Note on names
Over time this snail has been given many different scientific names, but Backeljaia gigaxii is the current accepted name.
