The plaintive rain frog, also called the rough rain frog, is a frog in the Brevicipitidae family. Scientific classification: Kingdom Animalia; Phylum Chordata; Class Amphibia; Order Anura; Family Brevicipitidae; Genus Breviceps; Species verrucosus. Binomial name Breviceps verrucosus Rapp, 1842. Synonym: Breviceps maculatus FitzSimons, 1947.

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1).

It is found in Lesotho, South Africa, and Eswatini. Its habitats include temperate forests, dry savanna, temperate shrubland, temperate grassland, and rural gardens. It is threatened by habitat loss.
